Coffee Talk: My Journey – “The 3 Pronged Triad”
REDUNDANCY.
“3-Pronged” & “Triad”.
Yes. I know.
And using redundancy in naming this entry is quite intentional.
Why?
Because, truly, it takes being redundant
moment by moment,
day after day,
week after week,
to establish habits
and to eventually see results in
WHATEVER IT IS I choose
and you choose to tackle.
WARNING: GEEKY ENGLISH TEACHER MOMENT HERE –
Synonyms for Redundancy may help shed more light.
*Superfluous Repitition. *Excess. *Surplus. *Oversupply *Iteration. *An act of being Repeated
Insert synonyms:
It takes a surplus, an oversupply, a repeated act of discipline,
(regardless of current motivation or mood),
moment by moment,
day after day,
week after week
to establish habits
and to eventually see results in
WHATEVER IT IS I choose
and you choose to tackle.
What am I tackling exactly?
Ultimately, taking on a very intense sport at the age of “OVER 50” and representing my very best effort here and moving forward
But also –
Redirecting the erratic, life-altering hormonal trajectory of menopause
Proving to myself (not to anyone else) that yes, I CAN
Laser-beaming my focus, energy, motivation rather than allowing diffused light to muddy the waters
Leading by example to all my clientele — insuring that I am a “practice what I preach” kinda trainer
So WHAT, you may ask, is the 3-Pronged Triad?
My coach sat me down at our initial meeting and bluntly stated –
“You are responsible for 3 things if you are going to do this. There are only 3 things that are completely under your control NO MATTER WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND YOU. At the end of each day you have to ask yourself — ”
*Did I eat according to plan?
*Did I get my workout in?
*Did I allow myself sufficient recovery / rest? (Because this is where the magic happens, friends!!)
That’s it.
Did I or did I NOT?????
This TRIAD is not dependent on my current level of motivation (which can change directions on a dime)
DID I OR DID I NOT?
The 3 Prongs aren’t an option based on outside influences.
DID I OR DID I NOT?
The TRIAD is an intact unit — I can’t pick and choose whichever ones I prefer.
DID I OR DID I NOT?
My excuses (which only look the most appealing to ME because I create them) don’t change the 3 elements of discipline.
DID I OR DID I NOT?
This week was a test of my resolve — my “DID I”.
I heard little voices in my head that said,
“It’s OK. You are doing the best you can. Go ahead and skip meal 6.”
“You lift weights all day long for your clients. You need a break. Don’t go to the gym today.”
“Can you just have something else besides another plate of meat, brown rice and broccoli?”
“A gallon of water is so difficult to get in. You’re ok with being 30 oz short.”
“What’s one little cheat treat?”
“That’s your least favorite body part to train … why not do something else today that you prefer?”
And you know what??
That enemy in my head (and in yours) will ALWAYS BE THERE!! It doesn’t go away. It doesn’t leave me/you alone. It stands like a sentry, guarding your comfort zone and tries to lure me/you in.
But I don’t look at that voice and wish it were gone, necessarily.
Why?
Because I like having a reason to fight. A villain to overcome. An enemy at the gates who, by golly, is gonna go down in flames if I have my way!!
This week — the enemy didn’t win. The excuses didn’t surface into mastery over my resolve. The 3-Pronged Triad stood firm.
And at the end of each day I was able to say YES!
YES I got my workout in.
YES I ate all my meals exactly as prescribed.
YES I allowed my body to recover / rest by taking short naps and going to bed at a decent hour.
And by being able to say YES on that
moment by moment,
day after day,
week after week protocol,
I am building more and more resolve to create habits
that will become stronger than the enemy in my own head.
And that, my dear friends, is the recipe for
REAPING RESULTS
REACHING GOALS
ROUNDING THE CORNER
REINVENTING SELF
REJUVENATING RESOLVE
READJUSTING MINDSETS
RE-AFFIRMING RESOLVE
I will continue to ask myself,
“DID I OR DID I NOT?”
And report to you my honest answer.
If I fall. I fall. But staying down is not an option.
Getting back up, wiping the dust off and continuing to hold that Triad in front of me, I will continue ONWARD AND UPWARD!
Until next week — I remain respectfully yours,
